Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Kramer and Debra Voulgaris.
Amy and Debra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
AMY: My own dog tore a ligament in her knee and had to have surgery. Post-surgery when she couldn’t bend her knee enough to get her through the dog door, I asked the surgeon for a recommendation and he said “Aren’t you a physical therapist? Do what you would do for a human!” When I realized that there wasn’t physical therapy “rehabilitation” for animals the light bulb went on in my head. I grabbed a dog anatomy book and realized that the structures were very similar. I treated her using manual therapy techniques I have used successfully with humans for years and it worked!
DEB: After spending a number of years in general practice and completing an anesthesia residency that had roots in pain management, I realized that my place in veterinary medicine was to recognize and treat pain in my animal patients. It was not until I started doing animal rehabilitation that I realized how many animals live with chronic pain that goes unnoticed. I also realized when I was very young, that many issues can be effectively dealt with by using natural means which is why I pursued and became certified in animal acupuncture and canine rehabilitation early in my career.
